For news junkies, Japan can seem a difficult place to get a fix. Often, major media outlets will all carry the same stories, with few variations between the reports that appear in the biggest-selling newspapers, television and online outlets.

Enter the weekly magazines. With a mix of politics, gossip and often porn, these publications, largely targeted at the male market, are the home of scoops, scandal and scantily clad women.

Politics and porn

Friday, a weekly that focuses on celebrity gossip, is one such magazine.

And while it has seen its sales decline to around 200,000 copies per issue, from a peak of 500,000-600,000 in the 1990s, the figures would still be the envy of most print media companies in other countries.

Jun Oyaizu, who has worked as an editor at Friday for eight years, says: “Friday magazine is a similar to America’s People. But in Friday there is much more than there is in People. Our readers get a combination of that magazine with something like Time and a music magazine.

“But magazines such as Time and Newsweek are very specific in their content. For Japanese weeklies, one magazine will include politics, economics, entertainment and porn. There are no magazines like this in the United States,” says Oyaizu....READ MORE

That incident involving Kitano was to cause a drop in magazine sales, but the advent of the Internet was to have a much harsher effect on Japan’s media landscape.

“Of course, readership is falling and things are not as good as they could be, but it is currently nowhere near as bad as the West here,” says Oyaizu.

“But nonfiction writers are struggling because of the decline of monthly magazines, and this is likely to have a big impact on society. I was in the United States at the time of Barack Obama’s presidential victory, yet as much as I tried to find analysis in Japanese, there was not a lot worth reading. There are of course blogs and websites, but these are nowhere near the quality of what you get from print media at the moment.”

While this may be the case now, the future may not be quite as bad, with Friday's editor pointing out that the average reader may be here for the longer term.

“The place we sell the most copies of our magazine is the Kiosk stores in train stations, followed by convenience stores. We also sell a few copies at book stores, but people are generally buying Friday on their way to work. It seems a large number of our readers would feel uncomfortable buying hardcore pornography on their way to work, but are happy to grab a Friday” says Oyaizu.

“The Internet is going to skyrocket over the next decade, but in Japan, people may still hold an affection for feeling paper in their hands, so magazines will survive in some form,” says Oyaizu....READ MORE

2011年12月7日 明治粉ミルクから放射性セシウム 原発事故後に埼玉県工場で加工

株式会社明治は6日、同社の粉ミルク製品｢明治ステップ(850グラム缶)｣の一部から放射性セシウムが検出されたことを明らかにした。

放射性セシウムが検出されたのは、賞味期限が2012年10月4日、21日、22日、24日の製品。検出された放射性セシウムの量は、1キログラム当たり22-31ベクレルで、食品衛生法の暫定基準1キログラム当たり200グラムを下回っている。同社は、毎日、乳児が飲んでも健康への影響はないとする一方、該当の賞味期限日製品だけでなく賞味期限が2012年10月の製品全てについて、希望する購入客に新しい製品と交換することを明らかにした。

新聞、放送、通信社の報道によると、粉ミルクの原料は全て東日本大震災の前、主に海外と北海道で生産されている。東京電力福島第一原子力発電所事故が起きた3月11日の後、3月14-20日に埼玉県春日部市の工場で加工された。外気を取り入れて乾燥させる加工工程で、福島第一原発事故で大気中に放出された放射性セシウムが入り込んだ可能性がある、と明治は説明している。

ウェブサイト「子供を守ろうSAVE CHILD」によると、東京都立産業技術センターの測定で、3月15日の午前10-11時に都内の大気から1立方メートル当たり124ベクレルの放射性セシウムが測定されている(東京都産業労働局 関連サイト )。また、早川由紀夫・群馬大学教育学部教授の火山ブログによると、福島第一原発から放出された放射性物質の汚染ルートは5経路あり、3月15日午後の飯舘ルート(飯舘-福島-郡山-那須方面)、3月21日の柏ルート、3月20日の一関ルート、3月の女川ルートに加え、群馬ルートがある。群馬ルートは15日午前、放射性物質を含んだ大気がいわき-水戸-東京-沼田-魚沼という経路をたどって流れ、春日部市もこのルート沿いに位置している。

Chinese netizens have slammed a popular model for a racy shower gel TV advertisement.

Popular Chinese video sharing website Youku featuring the near-naked Japanese-Taiwanese singer and actress Makiyo advertising a shower gel product wearing only bath foam.

The video attracted over 750k views within a day of being uploaded.

Netizens chastised her saying that she agreed to do the TV commercial because she was desperate for attention.

One netizen even said: "I would've immediately smashed my computer if I were her father!"

Another netizen was disappointed with the way many new celebrities are willing to expose themselves and 'selling their bodies' to become famous.

Makiyo was born in Yokohama, Japan and her father is Japanese while her mother is Taiwanese. She was reportedly paid two million yuan (S$402,400) to do the TV commercial.

Dancer Jin Jung Woon stated, “Most idol groups comeback with predictable dances, music, and outfits, but there are a few who people anticipate the most and give them their full attention. 2. B2ST was able to achieve 7 votes, securing second place right behind Big Bang. The judges stated, “The choreography is original and the members’ ability to express themselves is overall very good and stable”. This shows the growth B2ST has under gone since their debut in October 2009.
3. 2PM and INFINITE, a group that is showing an upward trend at an impressively fast pace, received 4 votes each and were awarded 3rd place with a tie. Dancer Shin Mi Yeon stated, “2PM has great balance of acrobatics and dance.” Dancer Bae Sae Jin stated, “INFINITE possesses a dance talent that cannot be beat by anyone. The judges stated, “Their ability to seize the atmosphere on stage is incredible and they have their own unique color, and express themselves well.” Jin Jung Woon stated, “I like that 2NE1 doesn’t give off a machine-like feel. They give off the vibe that they enjoy singing and dancing on stage.”
5. SNSD, miss A, and After School all received 3 votes each and tied for 2nd place. The leader of Real Eyes dance team praised, “After School has a variety of colors.”
6. As for individual members, which idols took the top spots?

In the survey for the best individual members of a male group, Big Bang’s Taeyang and G-Dragon took 1st and 2nd place, respectively. Choreographer Lee Woo Won stated, “Taeyang dances knowing the dance. He puts in emotion when he dances.” Dancer Kim Tae Gyu also picked Taeyang and explained, “His delicacy on stage and the coordination with the dancers, and a ‘feel’ that can’t be imitated is the biggest reason.”

While there, they decided to hold a special street survey asking Japanese men and women on who they thought the “best of the best” was between labelmates 4minute and G.NA.

The member that captivated the hearts of the ladies was 4minute’s HyunA, who came out on top for her sweet, yet stylish looks. Amongst the men, however, member Gayoon was thought to be especially charming due to her dual charisma in both innocence and sexiness.

KONAMIがtri-Aceとタッグを組んで開発を進めているプレイステーション・ポータブル向けRPG「フロンティアゲート。本タイトルのステージイベントが、“東京ゲームショウ 2011”のKONAMIブースステージにて開催された。

15人のキャラクターから自分のパートナーを選び、広大な大地を開拓すべく冒険していく「フロンティアゲート」。イベントではプロデューサーの向峠慎吾氏と、ディレクターの小牟田修氏が登壇し、そのゲーム内容を紹介してくれた。

さらにステージには、お笑い芸人“アメリカザリガニ”の平井善之氏と柳原哲也氏もスペシャルゲストとして登場。小牟田氏と3人で、実機を使ったデモンスト レーションを披露してくれた。「フロンティアゲート」のマルチプレイでは、各プレイヤーのキャラクターとそれぞれのパートナーキャラクターを合わせ、合計 6人のキャラクターで敵にバトルを挑むことができる。

デモの中では、それぞれが同時に別の敵と戦闘を行うという、一風変わったシチュエーションも発生。また各キャラクターのテンポの良いコンボ攻撃の様子も楽 しめた。ボスとのバトルでは、敵のAP（行動に必要なポイント）を下げつつ、自分たちのAPを徐々に高め、最後に連続20コンボを決めるという、迫力の シーンも公開された。


東京ゲームショウの開催に合わせ、本タイトルの体験版が現在配信中となっている。この体験版におけるデータは製品版に引き継ぐことが可能。さらに体験版を プレイした人には、オープニングムービーに登場する“赤の英雄”の装備が特典としてプレゼントされる。向峠プロデューサーによれば、“青の英雄”の装備も 何らかの方法で配布するとのことだ。また体験版をプレイした人を対象に、ユーザーボイスアンケートが実施中。このアンケート結果は実際のゲームになるべく 反映していくとのことなので、ぜひ自分の希望を開発陣に伝えておこう。

同DVDでのあまりの過激な内容に嫌気がさしたのか「着エロの分野というか、これ以上過激なのは出来ません! これが最後のDVDです!」といきなりラストDVD宣言。だが、気を取り直して「芸能界は引退しないですし、グラビアも続けます。普通のDVDはやりますよ(笑)」とファンには嬉しい言葉も。また、恵比寿マスカッツ6 件として控えているアジアツアー(11月16日香港、12月3日台湾)については「香港と台湾にも行きます。現在は頑張って中国語を勉強中なんです」と意欲を見せていた。
