A pair of young lovers was charged in court on Wednesday for allegedly extorting $6,000 from a man.

Yap Siew Ting, 17, and her boyfriend, Alexander Soh Zhi Ren, 22, each faces one count of committing extortion with common intention.

They are accused of intentionally putting Mr Ng Yong Cheng, 22, in fear of injury to his reputation by threatening to upload a nude video of him onto the Internet if he did not deliver the required sum of money.

They allegedly committed the offence on Jan 8 at around 5.40pm at a 13th-storey flat in Block 32, Marsiling Drive.

The long-haired Yap and the lanky Soh, who are jobless, were clad in black and wore spectacles.
They were the first of six suspected members of an online sex syndicate to be charged in court.

The members are aged between 17 and 47 years old.
Yap and Soh were arrested at around 4am on Tuesday at the Marsiling unit. Yap's mother and her boyfriend were nabbed at the same time following a police stakeout.

Another two members of the group - a Singaporean man and a female permanent resident - were arrested later that day in a separate raid in Ang Mo Kio.

Yap and Soh will next appear in court next Wednesday.
The court ordered that they be remanded for a week at Ang Mo Kio police division for further investigation as they are believed to be involved in other similar cases.

If convicted, they can be jailed between two and seven years and caned.

The Brazilian girl of Indian descent, who features in an item number in Ram Gopal Varma's Department, has now been cast in a new movie by the filmmaker.

"I am going to do an action thriller romantic film starring Rana Daggubati and Nathalia Kaur and the shooting will start very soon," Varma announced on Twitter Saturday.

Earlier, Varma had admitted that he had approached Leone for the item song Dan dan in Department. But when the deal didn't work out with Leone, who will be seen in Jism 2, the offer went to Nathalia.

Varma is glad he cast Nathalia for an item number, as he was able to tap her full potential as an actress.

"Many actresses I know shy away from doing item songs for fear of being typecast. But an item song for a girl is nothing but a moving portfolio. More than a still picture layout for a folio or magazine, an item song will give more details like her dancing and expressing abilities, etc.

"Only because I saw first hand how good Nathalia is in dancing and in her ability to emote in the item song, did I see her potential as an actress," he wrote.

The filmmaker is confident of his choice.

"Apart from being a fantastic looker, the fact that she can also act so very well is what made me decide to do a feature film with her," he added.

Violent Story Like Paan Singh Tomar Censors Object to Expletives

Violent Story Like Paan Singh Tomar Censors Object to Expletives

The censors displayed unprecedented liberality by passing an inherently violent story like Paan Singh Tomar with a 'UA' certification, which allows it to be a suitable watch under parental guidance. But it wasn't easy for director Tigmanshu Dhulia to get a clearance without toning down the language in the movie.

"Though the film is set in the Indian heartland and the characters speak a rough raw earthy bhasha, they don't use expletives as such. There is only one character played by veteran actor Rajendra Gupta, whose colourful language had the censorboard running for the scissors and gunning for the gaalis (abuses)," said a source close to the project.

Dhulia apparently had to fight tooth and nail to prove that cleaning-out the character's language would be tantamount to emasculating him. He had to wage a long battle, and still he had to finally expunge the expletives from the film, starring Irrfan Khan.

"There was a specially heated argument over one sequence towards the end where Irrfan's character is speaking to Gupta," said the source.

When contacted, Dhulia said: "Yes, the censor board did have a problem with Rajendra Guptaji's dialogues. He plays Irrfan's coach in the film. He uses a certain abuse in his language liberally and frequently.

"While I did agree to do away with most of the objectionable expletives, there's a scene towards the end when Irrfan visits his old coach, who asks, 'Why have you come to see me?' Irrfan says he's come to hear his gaali. Now, to not have a gaali here would be impossible. The whole sequence is based on the gaali."

Dhulia apparently argued his case. But the censor board was adamant, arguing that a 'UA' certification meant children would hear a member of the educational community abusing in a film.

Finally, Dhulia settled for a compromise, and tweaked the abuse.

"I had to make no cuts in my earlier film Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster in spite of its sexual content because it got a straight 'A' certificate. In spite of the film's violent heart, the censor board agreed to give Paan Singh Tomar a 'UA' certificate. That widens my audience spectrum. So then I had to make some adjustments".

Dhulia also had to alter some scenes showing the characters smoking.

"But that's okay. I'm just happy that the censor board is looking at a film with its given specific theme and milieu and not making arbitrary cuts," he added.

Paan Singh Tomar is a biopic on the former national steeplechase champion-turned-bandit. It released Friday.

Wah knn, I shine moi face on the mirror just now to reflect and see a dog image there!
Wah they really got foresight and no doubt AT are calling Sinkies as dog, it's true!

Anyone bought mirror from Daiso to reflect have the same reflection as me?!
Singaporeans are up in arms over a foreign scholar's derogatory comment that "there are more dogs than humans in Singapore".

The Ministry of Education (MOE) scholar in question, Sun Xu from China, was referring to his unpleasant experience with Singaporeans as he brushed against them.

A rough translation of his Chinese blog post read: "It's so annoying to have gangster Singapore uncles stare at you when you bump into them. There are more dogs than humans here in Singapore."

His comment has outraged Singaporeans, who questioned MOE policies. Some have even called for Sun's scholarship to be revoked.

Singaporeans like Nanyang Technological University student Choy Chan Yuan feel that Sun's comment was "unjustified, rude and ignorant".

Said the 24-year-old, "Why is our government paying him [Sun] to study here? How did he pass the selection process?"

He added that the government should "reconsider their policies" when awarding scholarships to foreign students.

Sun is currently studying at the National University of Singapore.

NUS student Chng Kahhwee echoed Choy's sentiments. Said the 24-year-old, "His comment is an insult to the Singapore nation, especially the group which he had specifically mentioned."

The year three economics student added that Sun should not have used "strong words" to express his anger, especially on social media.

"Given that he is a scholar background with educational funding from Singapore, the least he can do is to respect Singaporeans," she added.

However, others like NUS student Jay Tan feel that although Sun's comment was offensive, it did not warrant a revocation of his scholarship.

Said the 24-year-old, "He shouldn't call us dogs. I agree that uncles in Singapore behave like that, it's normal behavior…But his [Sun] comment is too exaggerated."

"Other scholars should use him as example not to make same kind of mistake. MOE shouldn't revoke his scholarship since it's not serious enough," he added.

Sun came to study in Singapore in 2006 on a MOE scholarship for students from China. According to TREmeritus, the final year student in NUS is currently on attachment in Schlumberger, an international oilfield services company.

There have even been calls from members of the public for MOE to revoke Sun's scholarship. In an online survey which asked respondents whether Sun's scholarship should be revoked, 96 per cent of those polled responded in the affirmative.

When asked by Yahoo! Singapore, NUS Provost Professor Tan Eng Chye said, "The University does not condone the disrespectful comment made by our student on 18 February 2012. All NUS students are expected to behave in a manner that is respectful of the community they live in."

He added that Sun has undergone counseling for the incident, and has removed the comment on his blog.

Sun has since posted an apology on the blog. "I am very sorry for the statement that I had made on my blog on 18 February 2012, which I now realize was insensitive and inappropriate. Please accept my sincere apologies," he said.

The provost also said that a board of discipline will be convened as Sun had "acted in a manner that is in breach of the NUS Code of Student Conduct, which reflects the University's expectations regarding standards of responsible behaviour in our students' academic and non-academic areas of university life".....READ MORE

"Although he didn't specifically mention Singaporeans, he just said "in Singapore". He didn't mention Singaporeans per se; it could have been an unpleasant experience which he had. I can imagine why people are unhappy, and it could be a result of the way young people write.

They could be expressive in how they describe things, which someone who's older might not appreciate. And of course, the slang and the things he used is very Shanghainese. I think it's quite colloquial, likewise I think there are some young-speak which I don't understand. Even his comment about the dogs - it might not literally mean that, it might mean something else, even though it is definitely not something positive.

He is a scholar, on Singapore govt's money, but I think we also need not jump to the conclusion to say that all foreign students on scholarship are like that, it could be minority who have the habit of posting things online. On the other hand, we have seen Singaporean scholars taken to task for having done things that are not appropriate. We have to accept that within every community, there will be some people who will ruin the reputation of their peers."

"I think first of all, these are behaviours that this gentleman has picked up. We need to reflect upon ourselves, are we the way they described? We should take this opportunity to reflect upon ourselves, but we should (also) be confident of ourselves. Even though some of us are like that, majority of Singaporeans are gracious, there are good people in Singapore."

Release Date: 23 February 2012
Language: Mandarin Chinese
Rated: 18
Genre: Action, comedy, martial arts
Running Time: 1 Hour 30 Minutes
Director: Michael Chuah
Cast: Henry Thia, Fiona Xie, Michael Chuah, Wang Xiao Chen

Synopsis: "Fist of Dragon is an action comedy that tells the story of Uncle Chen, a coffee shop owner who faces many hardships caused by the local triad. His nephew, Jie tries to help by fighting off the triad but ends up causing more problems. Jie's actions soon bring the wrath of the triad and drag the whole town into turmoil. Moreover, Uncle Chen's daughter, Lily is on the triad side and their relationship is badly affected when the confrontation between the triad and the townspeople reach its peak" (Mega Films Distribution Sdn Bhd).

Verdict: Fist of Dragon is perhaps the worst Malaysian-Singaporean film I've ever seen on big screen. The first half seems like it's gonna turn out to be another Bruce Lee movie rip-off before the "add-on" plot comes along as though they were suddenly unsatisfied with the story halfway during production and decided to go on and improvise without following the screenplay, resulting vagueness, lack of music, rushed closure, and hilariously flawed scenes. Besides that, the acting performance of almost the entire cast are annoyingly awful as well. The two or three decently choreographed action combat scenes cannot save Fist of Dragon from being the embarrassment that it is. The ending had me palming my face and sliding my fingers down hard, literally. The Ip Man 2 producer (Raymond Wong?) and Michael Chuah probably realised how miserable their film is, hence the 11 month hesitation to release (supposed to be released in March 2010). Or perhaps they took the 11 months to do the "add-ons" that ultimately made the movie even worse than it already was.

Dumbest scene: It was really difficult to pick one from so many but this one is definitely one of the most ridiculous scenes. [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] The part at the end where one of the three experiment victims miraculously wakes up, finds a syringe, stabs the triad boss (main villain) who so happens to be listening to his MP3 player right outside of the room, and just walks away casually. The triad boss is presumably killed by the needle. [SPOILER ENDS HERE] The production must have had ran out of budget or something.

Most pointless: [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] Lily (Fiona Xie) joins the triad to find evidence on her mother's death. Although she has no idea what she is supposed to be looking for, she sneaks into the triad boss' room to take photographs of half-opened documents in the dark without flash, and simply transferring files from the computer to her pendrive. She manages to pass the so-called evidence to his father (Henry Thia) but he does nothing with it. Nobody does anything with the evidence at all. [SPOILER ENDS HERE]

The scene that tries to indicate that girls are bimbos: [SPOILER BEGINS HERE] Both of the main female characters (Fiona Xie and Wang Xiao Chen) that get kidnapped by the evil and powerful gangsters don't get violated in any perverted way but instead, they get tied up to nothing, nicely seated on a tyre and are allowed just stand up and escape when their heroes are fighting to save them. But they still just sit there and wait for rescue even when the hanging objects above them are about to fall and crush them to death [SPOILER ENDS HERE].

Accent confusion? The guy who comes from China (Michael Chuah) does not have an accent but the girl who has been working at the local restaurant since young (Wang Xiao Chen) does.

Moral values: To be united? Please, like that hasn't already been taught in many different stories before. I'd like to take "not throwing rubbish at night" as the moral of the film instead 'cause in movie, bad things happen when you throw garbage outside at the middle of the night. (Laughs)

There's been plenty of back and forth between the web and RIM lately regarding the debut date of the next OS release for the PlayBook, and now we've got some hard evidence showing that the software is set to be let loose on February 21st .

As you can see in the picture above, PlayBook users will be able to download version 2.0 in the early hours of an unknown time zone next Tuesday.

The much anticipated update will finally give the tablet a native email client, improved BlackBerry Bridge functionality and plenty of other goodies.

Not only that, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will be rolling out that same day, giving IT professionals the ability to manage all BlackBerry devices from a single interface -- with Android and iOS controls coming in March.

The picture to prove it is after the break, and now that we got that settled, we can go back to speculating about BlackBerry 10, right?

An expanding middle class, strong economic growth, political stability and the need to link the resource-rich islands are fuelling a travel boom that could spawn even more local airlines, industry executives and analysts say.

Budget carrier Lion Air grabbed the limelight at the beginning of the trade fair on Tuesday when it formally sealed a $22.4 billion deal for 230 aircraft with US aircraft maker Boeing.

Lion Air ordered 201 Boeing 737 MAX and 29 next-generation 737-900ERs, with purchase rights for an additional 150 planes for its domestic and regional operations.

Dinesh Keskar, vice president of Asia Pacific and India for sales at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, described the deal as "the largest order in the history of aviation that I can know of".

With some 240 million people, Indonesia has the world's fourth largest population and is the most far-flung archipelago with over 17,000 islands scattered across 33 provinces and three time zones between Singapore and Australia.

Indonesia's economy grew 6.5 percent last year, the fastest pace in 15 years, with growth projected at between 6.3 and 6.7 percent this year.

Foreign investors ploughed $20 billion into the economy in 2011, up from $17 billion on year.

"Indonesia alone is able to sustain the robustness of the (Southeast Asian) market because the middle class is growing, it has a growing population and the country is also gaining confidence on the economic and political fronts," said aviation analyst Shukor Yusof of Standard & Poor's Equity Research.

"The country is creating the market forces that allow more and more people to fly. Geographically it's perfect for the industry."

Airlines are targeting Indonesia's eastern part such as Makassar, Sulawesi and Manado, all areas with a promising tourism sector, said Shukor, who expects smaller family-owned airlines to join the competition.

"And don't forget that these are all the areas where you have all the mines and all the resource-based industries," he added. "People have got the money to travel."

The market is so massive that there is still room for growth even with the current number of airlines plying the country, according to an executive at Indonesian flag carrier Garuda, which is facing stiff competition from private firms.

"There is enough to be shared by everybody. Even if new airlines come in, we can all still make profit," said the source, who asked not to be named.

At the Singapore Airshow, which is held every other year and closes this weekend, Garuda also signed a deal to buy six Bombardier CRJ1000 jets with an option for 18 more.

The six firm orders are worth $297 million, Canada-based Bombardier said, adding that if Garuda exercises the 18 options, this will raise the deal to about $1.32 billion.

And just two days after firming up its Boeing order, Lion Air announced it was buying 27 smaller aircraft from European manufacturer ATR.

The new ATR 72-600 turboprop planes, worth $610 million, will be integrated into Lion Air unit Wings Air, with full delivery scheduled for the end of 2015.

"The ATR aircraft are perfectly adapted to the Indonesian short-haul market and allows Wings Air to connect communities, even those located in remote areas," said Rusdi Kirana, chairman of Wings Air and president of Lion Air.

Even on the military side, Indonesia was also a star at the show.

The country signed a $325 million contract with Airbus Military for nine C-295 transport planes to be used by the air force for defence, logistical and humanitarian purposes....READ MORE

Singapore Budget 2012 Focusing on Infrastructure, Poor, reduce energy, water and waste

Singapore Budget 2012 Focusing on Infrastructure, Poor, reduce energy, water and waste
news,celebrities,trends,fashions,films,drama,videos,scandals,artists,phenomenals,sensation,beauty,actions

The budget for the fiscal year beginning April 2012 is also expected to include increased spending on the city-state's infrastructure as it struggles to cope with a sharp increase in population over the past five years.

Singapore, a major Asian hub for banks and multinationals, is facing pressure from citizens to tighten immigration and cap the number of foreigners, who now make up a third of the island's 5.2 million people.

Last year, Singapore-based companies employed an extra 79,800 foreigners — mainly from countries such as China and the Philippines — more than double the 36,600 increase in local employment, according to Singapore's Manpower Ministry.

Many Singaporeans blame the influx for overcrowding on roads and trains as well as competition for jobs that has kept real wages for lower-skilled workers stagnant during the past decade.

"Recent budgets have thus sprung more negative surprises on companies, with stricter foreign worker policies, including stricter quotas and increases in foreign worker levies," said Bank of America Merrill Lynch economist Chua Hak Bin.

"Greater attention on Singaporeans and lower-income households means that fiscal surpluses have been largely shared with individuals, and less so with companies, compared to the past," he added.

Singapore enjoys huge surpluses so Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam is under no pressure to rein in spending.

Chua said Singapore will likely report an overall budget surplus of around S$4 billion ($3.2 billion) for the fiscal year ending March 2011 — or about 1.2 percent of GDP — far higher than the government's initial estimate of about S$100 million.

Citigroup's Kit Wei Zheng said Singapore's overall fiscal surplus would be as high as S$26 billion if the government included as revenue proceeds from land sales as well as interest and dividend income from its investments.

In Singapore, income from government land sales is booked directly into reserves and not reflected as revenue in the annual budgets. Citi estimates Singapore collected nearly S$10 billion in land sales in the 10 months to January 2012.

Budget Steps

Singapore's economy contracted by 4.9 percent in October-December on a quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted and annualized basis and Tharman has warned growth will likely be weak in the next two years.

Inflation remains elevated at above 5 percent, however, which means authorities will have to tread carefully to avoid stoking spending....READ MORE

The Singapore Budget 2012 speech will be delivered by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, in Parliament next Friday. Singapore and the world is expected to face an economic slowdown over the next few years, thus this Singapore Budget is especially important in helping businesses prosper and not falter in the Year of the Dragon.

At Green Business Times, our top wish for this year’s Budget is to see the government help more companies reduce their environmental impacts and save on operating costs.

The government can consider results-based incentives to motivate more companies in reducing their environmental impacts, such as water and energy consumption, and waste disposal. The incentives would be based on how much energy, water or waste is reduced by the company, and could include rental or cash rebates, and tax deductions.

Existing government green incentives and funding are often technology-based or restricted to the implementation of a particular process, framework or methodology. In addition, the green incentives and funding usually apply to MNCs and large SMEs or manufacturing companies, and not to smaller SMEs or those in the service industry.

At the end of the day, we want companies of all sizes to reduce energy, water and waste so that they can reduce their operating costs and also do good for the environment. As long as the companies can achieve and verify actual reduction results, it does not really matter what company size they are, which sector they are in, or which technology or process they use. The government should reward any company that takes steps to reduce energy, water and waste, and recognise the company’s sustainability efforts.

For example, there are existing government funding for companies to implement energy efficient equipment or to retrofit equipment, but these technology implementations could be costly upfront and deter companies from doing so, even if there is government funding. There are other ways to reduce energy through non-technology-based initiatives such as increasing employee education, using design thinking, changing behaviour, gamification, or using social web and mobile apps. If companies can use these non-technological ways to reduce energy, then they should be rewarded too.

Another example is companies who are tenants in office buildings and business parks. If the company wishes to reduce its energy, water and waste, there are no existing government incentives. The company usually has to incur extra costs to install energy efficient lighting, water efficient taps, or implement a recycling programme. Although the company could save on its utility bill, it would help the company further if there are incentives to offset its upfront or recurring costs.

Incentives could be adjusted based on how much the company achieved in reducing its environmental impacts. For example, the more energy a company saves, the higher the incentive given to the company, and vice versa. In this way, the government would reward based on results and be technology, process, or industry-neutral. In addition, the government could become more productive by streamlining and consolidating existing incentives and funding programmes, and cause less confusion to the potential applicants. Companies of all sizes would also be motivated to achieve greater reductions.

Businesses need to reduce their operating costs in this time of economic uncertainty. The government can help by providing incentives that would reward companies based on the results of their actual reduction in energy, water and waste, and would benefit companies of all sizes and from all industry sectors...READ MORE

The Workers' Party (WP) has expelled Mr Yaw Shin Leong for failing to account to the party and the people for allegations of "indiscretions in his private life", party chairman Sylvia Lim announced yesterday.

"WP believes strongly in transparency and accountability, and expects no less from our party members, especially our MPs," said Ms Lim, reading from the party's English press statement.

WP's decision means that residents of Hougang Single Member Constituency may have to re-elect their Member of Parliament in a by-election.

According to the Constitution, an MP vacates his seat if he ceases to be a member of the political party for which he stood during the election.

Ms Lim made the announcement at a media briefing - called less than three hours earlier - at WP's headquarters in Syed Alwi Road.

A sombre Mr Low Thia Kiang, the party's secretary-general, media-team chairman Gerald Giam and media-team vice- chairman Pritam Singh co-hosted the briefing.

Mr Yaw's expulsion comes a week after he resigned as treasurer from the party's Central Executive Council. Non-Constituency MP Yee Jenn Jong took over the position.

Rumours that Mr Yaw was involved in an extra-marital affair with a female member of WP started surfacing online last month.

When asked to clarify whether the party had expelled him based on the nature of those allegations, Ms Lim replied that the party's assessment is that "he has fallen short of the standards we expect for responsible behaviour".

"In the face of these allegations, we would expect, especially our elected members, to come forward to address the allegations, not only to the party leadership, but also to the public," she said.

"And that is the reason why we feel that he has not met what we expect."
